In the spring of 2024, I was driving along Sunset Blvd, just past Century 21 and Dollar General, when I noticed a woman struggling to push a stroller on the side of the road. When I looked back, I realized she was trying to maneuver the stroller over rocks and dirt. It struck me as odd that there was a sidewalk before and after this section; we just needed to connect them.
I took some photos of the area and contacted the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT). I asked if they could examine the situation and fill the nearly 100-foot gap in the sidewalk, as it was a violation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Shortly thereafter, NCDOT responded to my request and said they could add this stretch of sidewalk to an ongoing project of theirs. Within a few days, their contractor was on-site, and the work was completed quickly and efficiently.
Once again, drawing from my 30+ years of previous work experience, I recognized that this issue needed urgent attention and provided the insight to address such problems. By applying that knowledge, the work was completed and the safety issues corrected.
