During my recent interactions around town, I've encountered numerous individuals eager to share their stories. I appreciate this greatly, as I believe in learning from the past to better navigate the future.
Recently, I had a conversation with Mr. J.C. Young, a long-time resident of Sunset Beach. Our discussion turned to the topic of weather, specifically the snow events of the past. While I mentioned the 1989 snow event, J.C. recalled a similar occurrence in 1980. Although the snow depth in 1980 was not as significant as in 1989, the accompanying conditions were severe. He described the experience as akin to driving in a blizzard. As he traveled from Charlotte, the snow began to fall lightly, worsening as he approached the coast. J.C. also noted that the bitter cold following the 1980 snow event caused the snow to linger.
Below is a link to an article by Scott Nunn from StarNews, which details the conditions of the 1980 snow event.
It is important to remember that it was only after the 1989 snow event that the NCDOT acquired new equipment for our region, such as spreaders and plows.
